ABOUT THE INN

Mary Faller Duxbury and Alan Duxbury

Mary Faller Duxbury is a native of Carlisle and returned home after 40 years of military life living in various towns and countries. Her Faller family roots in Carlisle history date back to 1823 when her great-great grandfather, Johann Baptiste Faller, arrived in Carlisle from the Black Forest in Germany.

Alan Duxbury hails from Great Britain where he grew up about an hour south of Carlisle, UK. He and Mary have visited that Carlisle and are happy to talk about the relationship between the towns, and the many ways in which Carlisle, PA pays tribute to its older twin.

Both Mary's and Alan's first loves include entertaining and cooking so they look forward to meeting and serving each of their guests.

Our home actually had three separate addresses on the old Carlisle Sanborn maps. The oldest is the federal style building at 148 South Hanover which was built in 1826 by Andrew Blair, a native of Carlisle (1789-1861). The Victorian features, such as the front window pediments, stairway curlicues and fancy newel posts were added in the 1880s by the family of Anna Woods, the succeeding owners. In 1927, William and Jessie Ewing moved their family home and business from West High Street to this home.

When it was built, number 148 stood alone, however in 1884 the old German Reformed Church and Graveyard adjacent on the north side was closed and all the "residents" relocated, most probably to the Old Carlisle Graveyard. David Bailey purchased the property which became 144 and 146 South Hanover Street on February 7, 1884 for $125 and built the present structure which has housed many residents and businesses including a steam laundry, tin wares shop, undertaker, doctor, confectioner and tailor. In the 1940's the Ewings purchased the property and for some time it was interconnected with 148. Sometime later the two doorways were bricked up, and were re-opened in 2005 as part of the new, expanded Carlisle House.
