Carlisle Historical Founded in 1751 sign

Steeped in history, the town of Carlisle was founded in 1751 as the seat of Cumberland County. Within very few years, the Carlisle Barracks, the Union Fire Company and the Dickinson College were established, all of which remain active contributors to the Carlisle community.

Historic individuals such as Benjamin Rush, James Wilson, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Molly Pitcher, Jim Thorpe and scores of others were all part of Carlisle history.

Many of its buildings date to the Revolutionary and Civil War era. One such structure was the home now known as The Carlisle House which was begun in the mid 1700s on Hanover Street. As one of the few original Carlisle homes not partitioned into private apartments or offices, the Carlisle House remains an elegant beauty in which you can relive the Carlisle history.
