We are fortunate in Carlisle to have two excellent seats of learning. Dickinson College is an exceptional college in the liberal education tradition. The specific disciplines of liberal education-all of which form part of the curricula - are called the Liberal Arts and comprise not just the humanities and social sciences, but also sciences and the arts. Liberal education is focused on the way in which knowledge is actually used in the real world of work and in our society.
Penn State, The Dickinson School of Law, was founded in 1834 by the Hon. John Reed. It is Pennsylvania's oldest school of law, and is the fifth oldest in the United States. It is within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas such as Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Alumni include no less than five governors, three U.S. senators, and more than 100 federal, state and county judges! And of course there are many prominent lawyers and civic leaders, too numerous to count, who claim Dickinson as their legal alma mater.
