August 2014 News

from Mary & Alan
at the Carlisle House

“And I love to ride my bike, which is great aerobics, but also just a great time for me to think, so it's like this terrific double bill." Robin Williams.

Starting from the Carlisle House, you have a wide range of touring options from walking tours to driving tours, and especially the various bicycling routes.

From our Walking, Cycling and Driving page you can link to all sorts of great information including the Map My Ride website where you can choose a route that is as easy or tough as you want it to be.

We get many cyclists staying with us, the photographs show just two of the groups who have enjoyed our hospitality and the wonders of the Cumberland Valley.

Whatever your reason for visiting,

Remember to check out "At the Dining Table" below, where you'll find a great selection of Sandwich places to provide you with sustenance during your hike or bike!

Boys and Girls go out to play...

The Flashback Feature
Two years ago this month we were happily telling you about our discovery of Hellenic Kouzina, a wonderful Greek restaurant in Mechanicsburg, just 20 minutes away. Elizabeth and Lambros continue to do well, and their restaurant has definitely become a major "place to go" in the Mechanicsburg area!

In August 2013 we looked at several travel web-sites including TripAdvisor and Select Registry. Now in 2014 we are thrilled that for the third year running we have received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, AND a Silver Award in their greenleaders program!

Hellenic Kouzina is now undergoing expansion to add an additional dining room and to enlarge their kitchen! Find out more at HellenicKouzina.com or on their Facebook Page. Select Registry continues to enhance both its and our reputation as the repository of information for the Distinguished Inns of North America.

This year again we'd like to remind you of the Select Registry App which you can conveniently download to your iPhone or your Android. More information is available at SelectRegistry.com and on their Facebook Page.

Friday August 8, 8:00
The Mavericks, once described as the "most interesting band in the world" are back. The country-steeped garage band with a Cuban American lead singer that had emerged from Miami in 1989 with their sultry debut that was equal parts innocence, intensity, and vintage influences has reunited in 2012 after an eight-year hiatus, once more making their genre-defying soul music. See them on youtube at this link
Wednesday August 13, 7:30
Indigo Girls - needing no introduction at all, we are thrilled that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are back in our area with an amazing concert. Seriously, if you have never seen them live, this is a great opportunity! See them on youtube at this link
Sunday September 21, 3:15
Capitol Steps - for over 30 years the Capitol Steps have been satirizing politicians in Washington. Seriously, if you have never seen them live, this is a great opportunity! With a cash bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres, all proceeds are benefitting the World Surgical Foundation in its mission to provide charitable surgical health care to the world's poor and underserved in developing nations regardless of race, color, religion, or creed.

The Luhrs Center in Shippensburg
In September the Luhrs Center has some spectacular performances!

Friday September 12, 8:00

At the Dining Table

Rolling in Dough!

One day the Earl was playing Cards
When hunger pangs struck him so hard
That he was really quite unable
To leave his lucky poker table.
Then a thought flashed through his head
He called for meat and lots of bread.
The Earl of Sandwich gave his name
To a favorite snack - then won his game!

As you're rolling through the lanes, cycling the trails, or just hiking off the beaten tracks of civilisation, don't let the lesson given us by the Earl of Sandwich escape you. Prepare yourself for the travails of your travels by calling in at one of our best purveyors of portable picnic fare.

Gaia Fresh Food Café at 57 West Pomfret Street caters to the connoisseur with wraps of all types, and also offers gluten free muffins should you be celiac or gluten-sensitive.

Courthouse Common Espresso Bar & Bistro at 3 South Hanover Street has a wide range of sandwiches all named after local legal luminaries. We rather like "The Ebert" but as Judge Ebert is a close friend, we may be biased!

South Side Deli at 46 West High Street offers a great selection of hot and cold subs, wraps, and sandwiches to suit every taste. If you think you may get lost in the trails of Kings Gap, for example, you could always take the 18-inch sub along with you. After all, why take chances?

Back Door Café at 156 West High Street includes "The Dickinsonian" amongst its choices. For your edification, it is chicken, bacon, shredded carrot, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing baked in a tomato tortilla. Yum! You can also take along a Grinder, or a Greek Gyro, or maybe a simple sandwich such as a "Drew's Dragon", or an "Italian Stallion", or even the modestly named "Best Tunafish Salad Sandwich - Ever"...

George's at 121 West High Street is a Carlisle Tradition founded in 1958, and features subs with a New England twist. For example, the New England Regular comprises bologna, dutchloaf, provolone cheese, tomato, relish, onions, seasonings, and oil.

Caffé 101 at 101 Front Street offers breakfast sandwiches until 11am and lunch sandwiches thereafter. "The Vern" comsists of "Thinly sliced roast beef and pastrami on an Asiago grilled ciabatta roll with swiss cheese, Cheddar cheese, feta cheese, onions and pepperoni with chipotle aioli.". At this point, I wouldn't blame you if you skipped the walking and cycling, and just drove as fast as you can to Boiling Springs!

Vinny at 330 South Hanover Street has a great selection of Italian-oriented subs, all made using their own fresh bread, made daily. Their Super Sub boasts fillings of Salami, Ham, Provolone Cheese, Turkey, and Roast Beef. Well, that covers all the food groups nicely!
