Wings over (and in) Carlisle!

Waggoner's Gap, just North of Carlisle, is a great venue for bird-watching all year around, but in the months from August 1 through December 31 an extraordinary wildlife event takes place.

"Very few experiences are more exciting than the sight of a Golden Eagle cruising south over a landscape cloaked in late autumn browns, yellows, and reds. And there is no better place in Pennsylvania to see this sight than the rock outcrop at Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch.", so says the Pennsylvania Audubon Society website, and vistors and volunteers travel PA Route 74 to enjoy the countryside and the glorious sights of Raptors crossing the skyline on their annual migration.

So why is our main photograph that of a chicken? To find out, check out our "At the Dining Table" section below.

Whatever your reason for visiting,

The 2014 Car Show Season is well underway

No, it really isn't a clip from the latest "Transformers" movie, it's a Ford Fairlane going topless in the 2014 Ford Parade!

We were, of course, fully booked for the Chrysler show this month, but there's no reason why you shouldn't reserve for next year!

We DO have space for the Carlisle Truck Nationals at the beginning of next month, so why not come and see everything from lowered mini-trucks through perfectly restored classic trucks, all the way to the monster trucks! Even if you're not a truck fanatic, you'd enjoy the sheer variety of one of the largest truck events in the world!

MOST unusually, we have just one room left for the Thursday and Friday of Corvettes at Carlisle, so for the premier downtown lodging with an awesome breakfast each day, be sure and book NOW!

And Remember there is NO BETTER WAY to keep on truckin' than to start your day than with one of our fabulous breakfast quiches featuring local produce!

The Whitaker Center in Harrisburg
In August there are some great performances coming up at the Whitaker Center. You may particularly enjoy these two!

Friday August 8, 8:00
The Mavericks, once described as the "most interesting band in the world" are back. The country-steeped garage band with a Cuban American lead singer that had emerged from Miami in 1989 with their sultry debut that was equal parts innocence, intensity, and vintage influences has reunited in 2012 after an eight-year hiatus, once more making their genre-defying soul music. See them on youtube at this link
Wednesday August 13, 7:30
Indigo Girls - needing no introduction at all, we are thrilled that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are back in our area with an amazing concert. Seriously, if you have never seen them live, this is a great opportunity! See them on youtube at this link
Sunday September 21, 3:15
Capitol Steps - for over 30 years the Capitol Steps have been satirizing politicians in Washington. Seriously, if you have never seen them live, this is a great opportunity! With a cash bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres, all proceeds are benefitting the World Surgical Foundation in its mission to provide charitable surgical health care to the world's poor and underserved in developing nations regardless of race, color, religion, or creed.

Wings Over Carlisle!

To fry or bake a chicken wing
Seems like a really simple thing
But when you visit our Carlisle
You really need to stay a while
To make certain that you're here to savor
Every single awesome flavor
From North to South and East to West
You'll see our Downtown's got the best!
Wings, that is!

So here is a list of all our favorite places to go when the urge for chicken wings is upon us...

The Market Cross Pub at 113 North Hanover Street has a great variety of flavors and heats, and on Wednesday evening offers a Wing Special night at $6.50 a dozen!

Redds Smokehouse BBQ at 109 North Hanover Street has excellent wings, along with their real applewood smoked ribs, pulled pork and chicken!

North Hanover Grille at 37-39 North Hanover Street offers wings from relatively mild "Lemon Pepper" right up to "Insanity"...

Andalusia at 26 North Hanover Street is a Spanish and Moroccan Tapas Restaurant, and you may wonder why they are on a Wings list. They only do one flavor of wing, but it is seriously delicious! You can also digress into their Koutban be Djaj, skewered tender chicken grilled with onions, green peppers and tomatoes, brushed with cilantro, parsley, garlic and olive oil marinade. H'mmm.

The Gingerbread Man at 5 South Courthouse Ave makes traditional Buffalo WIngs with a choice of mild or hot. But they also serve Cajun Chicken fingers. We didn't even know that chickens had fingers...

Alibi's Spirits at 10 North Pitt Street includes Carolina Gold BBQ sauce in their choice of sauces. Yum!

Vinny at 330 South Hanover Street offers BBQ, Hot, Crispy, or Plain (which is quite handy if you've already made your selection of Torchbearer Hot Sauce from our Gift Shop).

Rustic Tavern at 823 Newville Road serves "Jumbo Breaded Rustic Wings" with a choice of Old Bay, Hot, Mild, BBQ, or Hot Garlic Sauces. Interestingly, they also offer "Breaded Buffalo Scallops" served (as are the wings) with celery and bleu cheese.
