December 2013 News

from Mary & Alan
at the Carlisle House

The Holidays are upon us!

We hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving or Thanksgivukkah surrounded by family and friends, and are now relaxing in the long 27-day break before Christmas! If you celebrated Hannukah, starting on Thanksgiving day, better make the most of it, as it will be 70,000 years before the two dates again coincide!

Moving to more secular aspects, we also hope that you had a successful Black Friday, slightly black Thursday, and fairly dark Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday! Here at the Carlisle House we try to just do one holiday at a time, but even for us time pressures required that we start the Holiday decorations before Thanksgiving. And of course, you may well be reading this newsletter on Cyber Monday...

It's the Holiday Season...

...so further down the newsletter we'll remind you how to get a set of our luxurious linens - Comphy Sheets. As you probably know we can have them shipped at no additional charge either to you, or if they are a gift to someone else. You may be thinking of giving our Carlisle House Gift Certificates this year, so we'll also give you more details of our January Cabin Fever month, and how Gift Certificates used during Cabin Fever get double the value.

The great news for our guests this month, is that the Castlerigg Wine Shop opened for business right on our block on Black Friday. Full details are below in our "At the Dining Table" section.

To end the year on a high note, and to start 2014 with a bang, Carlisle's First Night Celebration is always a lot of fun, and this year promises to be no exception. With performances, concerts, magicians, ice carving, carriage rides, fireworks and much more, why not experience small-town America at it's best and most joyous, and come stay with us over the New Year!

BLACK Friday may have come and gone, but here in Carlisle you can find gifts for everybody still on your list from our Arts and Crafts stores and galleries. A comprehensive list is on our website's "Plan Your Visit" page and also on our Downtown Carlisle Association website.

"Those Sheets are like velvet", or "butter", or even just plain "Amazing!". We always enjoy hearing these compliments about our Comphy Sheets. Each sheet set consists of a fitted bottom sheet, a flat top sheet and two pillow cases, Queen and King size sets priced at $143 and $149 respectively.

In addition to White, Comphy sheet sets are also available in Chocolate, Cream, Silver Blue, Tea Green, Lavender, and Gray. For a downloadable pdf color chart Click Here, but remember your screen and printer settings mean that the colors you see are only approximate.

We are happy to have your sets drop-shipped to any address in the 48 contiguous United States, and we take care of the shipping costs! For pre-Christmas Delivery, call (717) 249-0350 soon to avoid disappointment!

Long Ago in 2006 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania promoted Cabin Fever - whereby for the whole month of January you could get 2-for-1 bargains in hotels, attractions and B&Bs across the state.

For the 9th consecutive year we are continuing this promotion, offering 2 night stays at half of the regular January price. January is the perfect month to relax with some down-time after the holidays, but because this promotion is incredibly popular we suggest making your reservation as soon as you can.

"Friends Don't Let Friends Stay at Chain Hotels!" at least not when you can give them a Carlisle House Gift Certificate for Christmas!

A Cash Gift Certificate in whatever amount you choose is an ideal gift. Your recipient can use it at any time, and for any available room.

The really great news is that by using the Gift Certificate in January your friend can get double the fun with our Cabin Fever two-nights-for-the-price-of-one month!

Check the US Postal Service last dates for holiday mail page and please give us an extra day to prepare the Gift Certificate.

If you have missed the US Postal Service last dates for holiday mail, DON'T PANIC! just send us an email with the message you'd like to send, and we will produce a pdf copy of the certificate, and send it by email either to you, or to your recipient!

Holiday thoughts... If you have family or friends in Carlisle, there is no better time of year to visit than Christmas and New Year. We still have some available rooms and would love to have you here so that you can enjoy the Holidays with the people you are close to.

Starting early on New Year's Eve the celebrations with more than 20 performers, most in some of Carlisle's most beautiful old buildings, continue through midnight when the Mini-Indycar Drop is followed by an awesome Fireworks Display!

We would like to say "Thank you" to all the sponsors, but particularly to Tuckey Companies who have also been our building and Mechanical Services lifeline since we opened!

At the Dining Table

When Megalithic men constructed the Castlerigg Standing Stone Circle about 5,000 years ago in the Lake District just south of Carlisle, UK they probably didn't realize that one day they would be memorialized as the Castlerigg Wine Shop in Carlisle, PA!

Yes! We are really excited to announce the opening of the only Wine Shop in Downtown Carlisle, and even better, it's on our block!

Alan Tumblin and his sister Denise own the store which at present features the wines from two Pennsylvania Wineries, Seven Mountains Wine Cellars, and The Vineyard at Grandview. The evening before we wrote this newsletter, we joined Alan and Denise at their first Wine-tasting, when we each chose a different 8 for $10 selection, 8 tastes of different wines, each accompanied by a paired cheese or chocolate. A 5 for $5 option gives you the opportunity to taste 5 wines without the cheese and chocolate.

As Castlerigg is between the Carlisle House and most of the restaurants in the downtown, this gives you an easy alternative when going to one of the many BYOB restaurants in our town.

And yes, of course we did not leave empty handed! Although we were both impressed by some of the sweeter wines which would make great after-dinner libations, we both prefer the dryer end of the spectrum. The chardonnay and the cabernet sauvignon which we now have on our dining table were just two of the many we enjoyed at Castlerigg.

We decided that for us, the Seven Mountains Chardonnay was seriously good, and the Grandview Cabernet Sauvignon quite excellent. As Mary prefers white and I prefer Red, you can see that we are never going to argue about who gets the last glass!

Castlerigg also has a comprehensive selection of wine accessories available, including vacuum pumps, wine bags, wine labels, and other essential pieces for the true oenophile! Their gift assortment also includes flavorful olive oils, preserves, and sauces.
