August 2013 News

from Mary & Alan at the Carlisle House

Welcome to August! Is there a better month for driving around discovering the hidden treasures in the back roads and small towns of America?
We don't think so, and this month's newsletter is devoted to showing you how easy it is with a Smartphone or Tablet to find moments of peace, excitement, happiness, and joy in your travels. Here in Cumberland County our motto is that whatever you're looking for, here you will say "Found It!".

Much as we'd like to think that you would never ever consider staying anywhere other than the Carlisle House, we do acknowledge that sometimes it is not possible. For example we are a long way from, say, New Mexico, so our main picture today is of the Select Registry Smartphone App which will help you find a great Inn in most of the USA and Canada.

But what if you are just a little too far from the nearest Select Registry Inn? Well, that is possible, so there is also a mobile website called InnsMobile.com (what else!) which can also find you B&Bs and inns all across the nation. InnsMobile does not have reviews, so once you've found an Inn, why not check it out on Yelp or TripAdvisor? Both of these have mobile apps which you will find immensely useful.

The Select Registry mobile App

As usual, at the bottom of the newsletter we highlight some of the great restaurants in and around Carlisle, but this time we have chosen some of our favorite restaurants and delis where you can get great sandwiches, subs, and meals quickly, economically, and most importantly, fillingly!

On the Road Again
It would be a little silly not to start off by mentioning the Google and Bing Search Apps which seem to be ubiqitous across most mobile devices. They will both provide you with a great deal of information, a lot of which you won't look at or need. Google in particular still displays reviews which may or may not actually be about the place for which you are looking. Understandable really, as there is another Carlisle House in Nantucket, and many, many Houses in Carlisles all over the world including Australia. Our favorite search result is that if you Google "Carlisle House Australia" then on the first page you will find a Yelp review for our B&B in Carlisle, PA… That of course is a case of a successful accidental search!

InnsMobile.com is a web-site designed to help the discerning traveler find B&Bs and Inns by city or state, or by using the "Geo Locate Inns Near Me" button. Inns Mobile try to list all inns and B&Bs as a service to travelers, even if they do not have a compatible mobile site.

Without any doubt the most influential review site for the travel industry is TripAdvisor.com. From their app you can find B&Bs and inns, find restaurants, read reviews and find out what other guests really think of the places you are planning to visit. The only way in which an innkeeper or restaurateur can influence the reviews is by posting a management response, whether to a good or a bad review!

These are just a few of the ways that mobile technology can help you. You may also want to check out Yelp, Foursquare, and Urbanspoon (the last one particularly for restaurants), and remember that when you find a place to stay, you may also need a place to eat - and at OpenTable.com you can search for, review, and make online reservations with over 28,000 restaurants in the United States!

At the Dining Table

We often talk about the many eclectic international restaurants that make Carlisle a very special place for foodies like us. Sometimes though, we yearn for a simple quick and tasty meal, or even just a sub or a sandwich. You will not be surprised to learn that we have favorite places to visit when that particular urge strikes!

Just two blocks away on South Hanover Street Vinny Restaurant creates great subs of all styles and sizes served on their own homemade bread made daily in the restaurant. Alan's favorite is the Texas Steak Sub with mushrooms, BBQ Sauce, onion rings, bacon and American cheese - as well as the beef of course! But Vinny's also serves really tasty salads for those times when you have the urge for a quick but healthy snack. With a name like Vinny, you would not be surprised to learn that they also feature pizza and a good choice of pasta dinners - all of which include their homemade bread, and a house salad.

Three blocks away on High Street you can find a real Carlisle tradition since the 1920s, the Greek family-owned Hamilton Restaurant where you will find local Carlislians vying for the waitresses attention to order the specialty of the house - the Hot-Chee Dog!

A Hot-Chee dog has a slice of American cheese placed on the roll, then a "dog", a layer of mustard, a generous helping of mild chile sauce, all topped with finely chopped raw onions. The Hamilton has a wide-ranging menu including breakfast dishes (Hot-Chee eggs, anyone?) and excellent fried oyster sandwiches.

The South Side Deli on East South Street is about to close its doors for good, but is re-opening on High Street right by the Carlisle Theater! South Side is our go-to place when we are asked to suggest simple catering meals for office functions or all-day seminars. Their subs range from 6" to 18" and their bread choices include a delicious Pretzel Roll - very Pennsylvania! The generous subs are excellent and you have your choice of more than 35 toppings at no charge! Their Facebook page will tell you the Soups of the Day which are available in three extremely reasonably priced sizes.

Just beside the "new" courthouse on the square you will find Courthouse Common Espresso Bar and Bistro. The menu has a distinctly legalistic flavor with a selection of paninis named after local judges. They are all flavorful but our favorite is probably The Ebert - a panini of roasted turkey, swiss cheese, bacon and honey-dijon mustard. With a Jury Selection of traditional deli sandwiches and their own-roasted coffee, Courthouse Common is yet another good place to find everything from an English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich (which should be, but isn't called the Magna Carta) through a Public Defender - tender London broil, mushrooms, melted swiss, horseradish sauce served in a wrap with their house sweet Maui onion chips.
