May News

from the Carlisle House

Here in Carlisle, Spring is well under way and May looks as though it will be starting with some spectacularly great weather! Nine days of peaceful sunshine with almost no chance of rain and the temperatures in the low seventies - what better time of year is there to enjoy all that Cumberland County has to offer? The trout are enjoying the Mayflies but not the mayfly flies cast by our fly-fishing guests! In fact two of our guests at the beginning of May are fly-fishing guides from the far west of PA who like to hone their skills on our local limestone streams.

Maybe we should cast some kind thoughts to our guests from New Zealand and Australia for whom May is a late Autumn month leading into their winter. For us though, we start with the first outdoor Farmers On The Square Market of the year giving us a chance to buy fresh local produce, some from the certified organic Dickinson College Farm. If you are following us on Twitter (@carlislehousepa) you will already know about the Farmer's Market and you will also have seen all the links to our Facebook posts. If you are within a few hours of Carlisle, then we are the perfect locale for a spontaneous getaway and Twitter and Facebook will certainly keep you well informed about the many events during Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Farmers On The Square

Farmers on the Square - The 2013 season of the downtown Carlisle farmers market opens on May 1 under the trees in the churchyard of the historic First Presbyterian Church on the Square. Pastor Jon will ring the opening bell right at 3:00pm, a market tradition dating back to 1693 at the Philadelphia market.

Come and join the supporters and all the great vendors - many regulars but some new ones as well. The vendors live and work within 50 miles of Carlisle, so it really is a local market!

Carlisle's original 1778 farmers market was catty-cornered from the present one where the new courthouse now sits.

Congratulations to the Class of 2013!

Graduates and Families: We are happy to have been able to host you for the last four years, and we wish you all the very best success wherever your future takes you. We really hope that a part of that future will include Alumni Weekends back here in Carlisle. There is no more devoted a group of alumni than Dickinsonians, some alums have stayed with us every year since we opened!

In three short months we will be welcoming the Freshmen of the Class of 2017. Here at the Carlisle House families and friends will be visiting Carlisle for presentations, performances, sporting occasions, and all the other events that occur during the academic year on the beautiful Dickinson campus.

We will also be saying "Goodbye, and thank you for your years of service" to President Bill Durden, and "Hello and welcome to Carlisle!" to President Nancy Roseman.

A new era at Dickinson College will begin - and we will continue to see "our" students go out and "Engage the World"!
