August News

from the Carlisle House

August is an exciting month in Carlisle. With so much happening here and so many places to go, activities to do and awesome foods to eat, we know our August guests will be glad they visited!

The month starts with the great news that for the 9th consecutive year we have been voted the Best of Carlisle Bed and Breakfast. Now you may be tempted to ask how Carlislians could possibly know about our B&B. The answer is one word - Staycations!

A longer answer is that the Professional Association of Innkeepers International has launched a "Better Way to Stay" campaign encouraging travelers from all over the country to consider that B&Bs just may have something more to offer than chain hotels!

Visit BetterWayToStay.com and check out the videos!

So if you do live relatively close to us, why not think about a "staycation" in Downtown Historic Carlisle? With all that Carlisle, and the Carlisle House have to offer in August and September you really need to take advantage of the treasure on your doorstep. And if you don't live close, well what are you waiting for? Carlisle and the Cumberland Valley is the perfect destination for that brief or long getaway you've been promising yourself!

Dickinson Orientation - August 22

School days are almost here and we are looking forward to seeing all of our Dickinson families back here again, especially the Freshmen, and welcoming new ones. Have a great year! Book early for your visits!

Breaking News!

Carlisle Events, the home of 10 world-famous annual Carlisle Automotive events, today announced that in September 2013 a major new event will be added to the roster.

The Carlisle Sports and Outdoor Nationals will take place annually during the first full weekend following Labor Day - in 2013, that will be September 6-8.

While this will be of particular interest to our fly-fisher guests (we have two of the top 50 trout streams in the world within 5 miles!) Carlisle Events intend this show to be for all the family with everything from a fishpond with casting for kids, through monster truck rides, ATV test drives, several competitive events and of course a swap meet for new and used hunting and fishing gear.

They also intend to have a Corral for boats, RVs and ATVs.

To support Carlisle Events' new venture, we are offering a one-time room price reduction of 15% for your three-night reservation starting September 5, 2013. We look forward to seeing you then!

Every so often we find ourselves outside of Carlisle - maybe on a shopping trip to check out new amenities for our guests, or even just because we have a couple of hours spare to visit neighboring towns. On a recent trip we were able to visit a cafe recommended to us by a guest.

Over the breakfast table, we learned of Hellenic Kouzina Greek Cafe and a few days later we were in Mechanicsburg at lunchtime and had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth and Lambros Alexopoulos and of enjoying their wonderful food. We wanted to taste a variety of foods, so we ordered the Pikilia - a combination of 2 Pork Souvlaki, 2 Chicken Souvlaki, 2 Spanakopites, 2 Tiropites, and 2 Dolmades. And to go (because we were stuffed!) we took a portion of "Yia-Yia's Baklava Cheesecake".

Because this is definitely a cafe, you will queue up to place your order, and be given one of those little flashing vibrating devices to tell you when the food is ready. You can download the menu from HellenicKouzina.com and enjoy anticipating a terrific authentic Greek meal!

The Pikilia. Yum!
Hellenic Kouzina is located at 500 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg PA 17055
